Ethical Investing

Polaar Bear
What is ethical investing?
Can I make a social difference?
Can I make a decent financial return?

Investors often ask these initial questions when considering how to structure their investment portfolios.  Before you get started exploring the world of ethical/socially responsible investing, make sure you know what are your own social investment goals, your curent financial situation and your financial objectives. To help you, Chaile International has a free Ethical Investing Workbook which you can copy and use yourself.

Chaile International also has provided a series of links which can provide you with further information. (DISCLAIMER)

Mirror Lake 2Ethical investing - sometimes also called socially responsible investing - is about incorporating your personal values and societal concerns with the investment decisions that you make.

Ethical investing is where the investor considers their own financial needs and the societal impact that their investments might have.  Essentially you are putting your your money to work to build a better tomorrow while earning competitive returns today.

A wide range of investors can be ethical investors, including  individuals and institutions such as corporations, universities, hospitals, foundations, insurance companies, pension funds, nonprofit organizations and churches.

There are three broad methods of addressing the ethical/social responsiblity issues associated with investment.  These are:

  1. Screening
  2. Shareholder Advocacy
  3. Community Investment and Social Venture Capital.
ElephantChaile International examines just one aspect of these - screening - and only in a mututal funds context.  For more information about ethical and socially reponsible investment issues have a look at some links we have identified.
